Earlier this fall, Mr. Bastian was presented with the Cognia Circle of Excellence Award which recognizes outstanding leadership in innovation. It is awarded to an individual who:

• Demonstrates outside-of-the-box thinking
• Initiates potential in self and others
• Builds connections and maintains relationships
• Advocates for continuous improvement in education
• Serves as an ambassador to expand a best practice sphere of influence
According to Cognia representative, Denise Seohren, "Mr. Bastian has been a vocal advocate and model for commitment in continuous improvement and educational excellence in North Dakota. He has shared his expertise and talents at the school, district, and state levels, as a principal, superintendent, and as state editor of the NDAESP."
